Austin Chapter of NHI's Young Leaders Conference
Austin Achievers

The Young Leaders Conference is the oldest youth leadership project of the National Hispanic Institute, dating back to 1981 in Austin, Texas, two years after the organization was founded. In 1985, the first pilot Great Debate was unveiled at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. At the time there were only three teams, including Austin, Houston, and the Texas Rio Grande Valley. Though RGV won the first test tournament, Austin has continued to lead and innovate the YLC program with its dynamic participants and dedicated staff.

The Young Leaders Conference is a program of
The National Hispanic Institute

The National Hispanic Institute provides Latino families, nationally and internationally, with private experiences on American college and university campuses that are specially designed to advance the educational aspirations of thousands of high school age Latino youth. More important, these settings allow them the opportunity to determine different options and choices in contributing to Latino community life through leadership service. Parents may elect to engage their children in these learning experiences as early as the ninth grade and throughout undergraduate college studies.

Currently, NHI hosts national and international program with high ability youth. Years ago, when NHI was first established, there was a realization that the organization had to be different and distinct from other organizations. Today its message continues to be as strong and exciting to the young people whose lives it touches as it is to the staff and hundreds of volunteers who annually conduct its work.

Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session

The Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session (LDZ) is the most recognized high school age leadership program of NHI. Started in 1983, the overall challenge of the LDZ is for the students to envision themselves as part of the future leadership of a 21st Century Latino community.

This dialogue is the centerpiece of the LDZ experience, the basis for young people to share their innermost thoughts regarding their hopes and dreams for a 21st Century Latino community, and the roles they expect to play in shaping their world as future leaders.

Students are asked to assess the promise and potential of a community rooted in a reality of dual cultures. Critical thinking, collaboration, and the ability to influence outcomes will emerge as essential skills to facilitate success as a leader in the 21st century Latino community.

In short, students can expect an extraordinary experience that will leave them with the exciting knowledge that beyond their personal and professional ambitions, there is a higher calling of leadership service that NHI is preparing them to assume.

Collegiate World Series

The CWS focuses on the power of positioning as a foundational tool of leadership. The CWS is designed for students who not only wish to make informed choices about college, but who are ready to evaluate, analyze, and make conscious decisions about their life direction.

This program builds success behaviors for students to excel in the college admission process and in college life, both academically and socially, while engaging students to reflect on the cultural, moral, social, and personal values that inform their identity and life goals.
